Engine Generator
add-on
Animated combustion engines of any layout in one click: inline, V, VR, W, boxer and radial, with working pistons, cams, valves, timing drive, turbos and cutaways.
Engine Generator builds a complete internal combustion engine in one click, and every part of it moves. Pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, camshafts, valves, springs, rocker arms, pushrods, timing chain or belt, pulleys, turbochargers and the supercharger all run from a single crank angle, so pressing Play shows the engine running with a real firing order and real valve timing.
Choose any layout: inline with any slant, V with any angle between the banks, narrow VR, W (two VR banks or a three-bank broad arrow), boxer, or a single or twin-row radial. Pick the number of cylinders, the bore and the stroke, and the crankshaft, firing order and displacement follow.
Features
- Inline, V, VR, W, boxer and radial layouts with 1 to 18 cylinders
- Selectable bank angle, VR angle and inline slant
- Crankshaft: auto, flat-plane, cross-plane, split-pin even firing or big-bang, with full, partial or no counterweights
- Firing order and firing intervals computed from the geometry, shown in the panel
- DOHC, SOHC or pushrod (OHV) valvetrains with 1 to 3 intake and 1 to 2 exhaust valves per cylinder
- Cam lobes shaped from the same lift curve that drives the valves, with adjustable lift, duration and lobe separation
- Timing chain, toothed belt or gear train, exposed or behind a closed timing cover
- Gasoline with spark plugs and coils or a distributor and plug wires, or diesel with common-rail injectors and glow plugs
- Carburetor, port or direct injection; plenum or individual throttle bodies; tubular headers or log manifolds
- Naturally aspirated, turbo, twin-turbo (including hot-V) or a belt-driven Roots supercharger
- Water-cooled blocks or finned air-cooled cylinders
- Side and front cutaways that show every moving part, with colored intake, compression, combustion and exhaust gas
- Alternator, water pump, serpentine belt, starter, oil filter, flywheel and a propeller on radial engines
- 24 engine presets to start from: 2JZ inline-6 twin turbo, small-block V8, flat-plane V8, V12, W16, VR6, boxers, V-twin, radial 9 and more
- Bake Animation turns the motion into keyframes for export to game engines and other apps
- Every part is its own object at real-world scale, and all of it stays editable
Every driver uses Blender's simple expressions, so engines animate even with Python auto-run disabled.
Requires Blender 4.2 or newer. Tested on Blender 4.2, 4.5 and 5.2 LTS.
How to use
Installation
In Blender open Edit, Preferences, Get Extensions, then use Install from Disk and pick the engine_generator zip.
Usage
- In Object Mode, open the 3D viewport sidebar (N) and go to the Engine tab, or use Shift+A, Mesh, Engine.
- Click Add Engine, or Add Engine Preset to start from a small-block V8, W16, radial and others. The engine appears at the 3D cursor at real-world scale.
- With the engine (or any of its parts) selected, change the layout, cylinders, bank angle, bore and stroke, crankshaft, valvetrain, timing drive, fuel, aspiration and look in the sidebar. The engine rebuilds instantly.
- Press Play: the crank turns at the RPM set under Animation. Turn Animate off to pose the engine by hand with Crank Angle.
- Set Cutaway to Side or Front to open the engine and watch the combustion cycle.
- Bake Animation writes keyframes for export. Make Static keeps the parts as plain objects.
FAQ
Which Blender versions are supported?
Blender 4.2 and newer. It is tested on Blender 4.2, 4.5 and 5.2 LTS.
Does the animation work when I send the file to someone without the add-on?
Yes. Every moving part uses simple-expression drivers that Blender evaluates without Python, so the engine keeps running in any Blender 4.2+ file. Use Bake Animation to get plain keyframes for export.
Is the engine mechanically accurate?
The motion is. Pistons follow true slider-crank kinematics, rods stay on their crankpins, cams turn at half crank speed and each lobe is shaped from the lift curve of its valve. Firing orders come from the crank and bank geometry. The castings are simplified for a clean, readable look.
