BoneBake - Bake Cloth, Shape Keys & Any Deformation to Bones
add-on
Turn cloth sims, shape keys and Geometry Nodes animation into an armature, skin weights and baked bone animation that Unity, Unreal, Godot and Roblox can play. Error heatmap shows where to add bones. Includes a Roblox Dynamic Heads preset.
Game engines play skeletons, not cloth caches or shape keys. BoneBake looks at how every vertex moves across your animation and fits bones + skin weights that reproduce it (the SSDR method), then bakes the bone animation. Export with FBX or glTF and it plays in Unity, Unreal, Godot or Roblox.
Works on: cloth and soft-body caches, shape key animation, Geometry Nodes and modifier animation, anything with a fixed vertex count.
Measured: a 1,617-vertex cloth flag over 100 frames bakes to 48 bones with 0.29% error in about 2 seconds. A head with 6 shape keys came out at 0.016%. Max 4 bone influences per vertex, so it's game-engine safe.
Error heatmap: green where the bones fit, red where they can't keep up, so you know where to add more bones instead of guessing.
Roblox Dynamic Heads: ARKit shape keys are mapped to Roblox FACS poses, the head is checked against Roblox's rules (18 checks) and exported as an FBX that imports in Studio with FaceControls. Tested in Roblox Studio.
Not for: things that change vertex count (fluids, remeshing). Bones are rigid, so very fine wrinkles need many bones.
Blender 4.2 to 5.2. Questions or a mesh it handles badly: leave a comment.
