Karelia Revision
add-on
Review FBX/OBJ updates, retain material choices and modifiers, and restore the last revision when needed. Preview changes before applying. Windows-tested beta for Blender 4.5 LTS.
A new model revision should start with a clear view of what changed.
Karelia Revision is a preview-first FBX/OBJ reconciliation tool for Blender visualization work. Import your original model into an owned baseline collection, finish it in Blender, then stage a revised source file. Review added, changed, unchanged, removed and blocked objects before applying selected changes.
A three-step sidebar keeps source selection, comparison and review together. Select permitted additions and updates in one action, inspect the counts and reasons, then apply only the changes you intend. Removals remain an individual choice. Export a readable JSON change report to discuss the preview before applying it.
Know how a revision was matched. The sidebar and JSON report count actual stable IDs and lower-confidence exact-name fallbacks in both sources. If the configured ID field is missing, inspect the text/integer property fields that were actually exported. The extension never silently chooses another field or matches unrelated scene objects.
Updated objects retain their local modifier stacks and material choices when the documented mapping requirements are met. Original source material names guide slot mapping, including reordered source slots. Source placement is adopted by default; opt into keeping local placement when that is what your scene needs. Artist-added parent relationships remain. Unchanged source meshes keep their current Blender data.
Restore a new-format revision from the Recovery section when needed. The latest apply can be reversed after saving and reopening the Blender file, without the original source model. Updated objects regain backed-up geometry and placement, archived removals return, and that revision's additions are archived. Recovery refuses to overwrite conflicting local edits or use edited/incomplete backups. Shared shader edits are not rolled back. Older 0.2 backups still require manual recovery.
Version 0.3.0 is beta. Tested on Windows with Blender 4.5.14 LTS using synthetic FBX/OBJ revisions. This is conservative reconciliation, not a universal CAD merger. Test a copy of your own production files before adopting it for client work.
Requirements- Blender 4.5 LTS minimum; tested combination: Windows and Blender 4.5.14 LTS.
- FBX or OBJ source files containing meshes and/or empties.
- Stable unique exported string/integer IDs for reliable identity matching; exact unique names otherwise require consent.
- Unique original source material names and an unchanged local material slot count.
- The installed Blender executable and its bundled FBX importer must be available; imports use a clean local background Blender process.
- Incoming source hierarchy is flattened to world-space placement. Cameras, lights, curves, armatures and animated hierarchies are not supported.
- Exporter compatibility is not assumed: Revit and Archicad exports do not all carry usable stable IDs.
- Duplicate IDs and detected identity-contract changes block apply. If both name and ID change, no reliable association can be inferred.
- No automatic UV or weight transfer across incompatible topology; shape keys and conflicting local base-mesh edits need manual reconciliation.
- Modifiers remain, but index-dependent modifier results may need adjustment after source geometry changes.
- No arbitrary custom-attribute transfer, texture-file change audit or universal geometry merge.
- Backup materials share shader datablocks; subsequent shader edits affect both the current object and its backup.
- Cross-platform and other Blender-version compatibility have not yet been validated. Synthetic tests are not customer production validation.
- Guarded automatic recovery applies to 0.3 new-format journals; older backups require manual recovery.
- Recovery retains local modifiers and shared shaders; subsequent shader datablock edits are not rolled back.
- Conflicting local edits or incomplete/edited backups block automatic recovery and require manual assessment.
